Then look up.

On a clear day, the enormous snow-covered peak of Mount Ararat rises behind the city.

One of Yerevan's best-known spots is the Cascade, a giant staircase climbing above the city. Walk to the top and you can look across the rooftops toward Ararat in the distance.

And Yerevan is only the beginning.

You can stand inside a church carved into a mountain.

Drive outside the city and Armenia gets strange very quickly.

In a good way.

At Garni, an ancient columned temple sits high above a gorge.

Nearby, you'll find Geghard Monastery, where parts of the complex were carved directly into the surrounding rock.

Not built beside the mountain.

Carved into it.

You can walk from sunlight into chambers cut from solid stone centuries ago, then step back outside into a valley surrounded by cliffs. Armenia's own tourism board puts Garni and Geghard together as an easy trip from Yerevan.

Then there are the red-rock canyons.

Head south and the scenery changes again.

Near the wine village of Areni sits Noravank, a medieval monastery surrounded by towering red cliffs.

Go near sunset and the rock catches the light.

The whole canyon starts glowing orange and red.

It looks less like somewhere you booked a day trip and more like someone accidentally dropped an ancient monastery into Utah.

And nearby?

Wine country.

Armenia has an extraordinarily old winemaking tradition, and vineyards still spread through this part of the country today. The Ararat region alone mixes vineyards, orchards, monasteries, mountain scenery and modern wineries.

Then eat everything.

This may be the part where I personally stop sightseeing.

Armenian khorovats is meat grilled over fire and served with vegetables, herbs and huge sheets of lavash.

Lavash is the thin Armenian bread traditionally baked against the hot wall of a clay tonir oven.

Take warm lavash.

Throw grilled meat, onions and herbs inside.

Fold.

Eat.

Regret nothing.

Then there is tolma stuffed with meat and rice, local cheeses, fresh fruit, grilled vegetables, Armenian wine and enough bread to make your previous opinions about carbohydrates feel childish.

You can escape to a giant lake in the mountains.

About an hour from Yerevan sits Lake Sevan.

It is enormous.

The lake lies around 6,234 feet above sea level, surrounded by mountains, with nearly 250 kilometers of shoreline.

In warmer weather you can swim, take a boat out, eat beside the water or climb above the lake to Sevanavank Monastery for the view.

Imagine waking up in Yerevan...

Driving into the mountains...

And eating lunch beside a massive blue alpine lake before heading back to the city that evening.

And if you're feeling ambitious, there is Tatev.

Farther south sits one of Armenia's great showstoppers.

Tatev Monastery.

An ancient monastery perched above the enormous Vorotan Gorge.

And getting there can be half the fun.

The Wings of Tatev aerial tram carries visitors across the gorge toward the monastery, with mountains dropping away beneath you.

So, yes.

You can spend part of your Armenian vacation floating across a canyon toward a medieval monastery.

Apparently civilization has been holding out on us.
